Blog #11: A Picture Is Worth . . .

In the spirit of multimodality, tell us about an image that has changed your life. It could be a photograph, a painting, a sculpture, a logo . . . or even a memory of something you once saw. Tell us about why it affected you and how it has influenced your life.

  1. I wouldn't say that I have any specific pictures that have changed my life, but I do have two photos that I have kept for a long time that are very important to me. One is a photo of me sitting on my grandfather's lap when I was 18 months old. I was all dressed up and it is the only thing that I have left of him. Since he passed away when I was six, I do not have many memories with him. This photo reminds me of the love he had for me and it makes me strive to be better so I can make him proud. This photo is more motivating than many other things that I have, simply because I know that he wants me to be the best and that he is watching over me.

  2. I actually have two so I'll just delve into them briefly. The first is a sculpture that was modeled after a picture of my grandfather in military uniform and grandmother with a new born baby. The photo was taken only a few months after the closing of WWII. The sculptor believed that it best represented that generation of Americans: young kids having been through a World War now returning home with all the potential in the world with doors open to them now that were never even possibilities before. It doesn't really affect me personally, but it still meant a lot.
The other was a simple picture that I saw in a Relief Society room in New York. It was a picture of Jesus Christ hugging his mother Mary. The painter really displayed the emotion of just how much Christ loved his mother. One of the most powerful beings in the universe holding his mother in his arms tightly. This not only showed how important a role the mother of Jesus played, but how important a role all mothers play in all of our lives.

  3. My favorite picture is o Jesus with the little children on his lap because it hung in my room all of growing up. It always reminded me that although most religions paint Christ as just this unimaginable powerful being, not very personable. This painting depicts him as a friend, older brother and someone who cares for the individual.

Another of my favorite pictures is all of my sister and I with my grandpa because he rarely smiles or takes pictures. We successfully got him to do both, (against his will) when we grabbed him and pretended it would be a regular picture and at the last second suprise kissed him on the cheek. I love taking people out of their comfort zones and even better is catching it on camera.

  4. A picture that has changed my life is a picture of the 12 apostles and the 1st presidency around the time when I was 8 years old. My church primary teacher gave us all a picture of them and asked us to memorize all of their names, so I did. It has been on a shelf at home ever since then.

Beyond simply remembering their names, the picture has helped me to learn to revere the Lord's apostles and prophets more fully. As I become acquainted with them and listen to them speak, I have come to know that they are the Lord's chosen to bring us his word today. I have grown to love the prophets of our church and to listen to them with great respect because of this.

  5. One picture that I have been thinking about lately is one I happened across on the internet. In this photo, the photographer is in the ocean, but really, really far down, and the picture is of a person up near the surface. The image basically depicts the vastness of the ocean. I think that the ocean is amazing and it is one of Heavenly Father's most beautiful creations. I like this picture because it is a visual testament proving how much we don't know.

  6. Well, I love tons of pictures. But one in particular that has actually influenced my life and helped me to be a better person is the classic picture of Christ in His red robe. It seems I have seen this pictures in extremely important or spiritual moments of my life so it's tied directly to those moments that have helped to shape who I am a bit. I also looked at it nearly daily on my mission and it served as a reminder of everything He does for us and WHY I did what I did. I love that picture and everything it symbolizes and represents.

  7. Okay, well my dad passed away when I was two years old so my memory of him is very vague. Due to the many pictures in my house of him with my family and I, I have been able to visualize what he was actually like. Although the pictures mean more to my family than me because they realistically remember the incidents, I am still very thankful for them because that is the only way I have come to "know" and "see" my father.

  8. One picture that has influenced my life is a picture that is found in the confirmation room in the Denver, Colorado temple. When I was younger I had an experience where I was being confirmed for one of the first times for various people by my grandfather. While I was sitting there I opened my eyes for a brief moment to look up, and there in front of me was a beautiful picture of Jesus Christ laying his hands on a mans head. For some reason the image really touched me. I felt such immediate love for my grandfather and my Savior. I imagined what it would be like to have him in that room with me, or even to have him lay his hands on my head. I knew that I was in the right place doing the right thing.

  9. It's not exactly a picture, but i remember going to the grounds of the Washington D.C. temple and just looking up at the temple. Even drawing near to it from the freeway was awesome because it was so bright. It made me happy to see and my siblings and I would try to see it first when we were getting close. It has interested me from an early age in the temple and caused me to want to go to temples more because I felt good whenever I was around the D.C. temple or at least saw it.
